Hughes’ work exists in a realm between invented and natural worlds, in which familiar arboreal silhouettes and grounding horizon lines are made supernatural by bold brushwork and paradisical palettes.

Shara Hughes (b. 1981) lives and works in Brooklyn, NY. She received her BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design in 2004 and was an artist in residence at the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture. Hughes is widely recognized for her ability to bridge unnatural scenes with illustrative logic through vivid hues and emphatic gestures.

Her work has been acquired by the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Denver Art Museum, and the Smithsonian American Art Museum among other collections.
