Andrews emerged as a pioneering creative and political presence during the Black Art Movement of the 1960’s and 70’s. His technical mastery and visually engaging figuration addresses social injustice and racism.

Benny Andrews' (1930 - 2006) artistic talent emerged at a young age and was quickly nurtured by his family. After serving in the US Air Force from 1950 - 1954, Andrews attended the Art Institute of Chicago, where he recieved his BFA in 1958. In the same year, Andrews moved from Chicago to New York where his career flourished.

Biography

Benny Andrews (1930 - 2006) was born in Plainview, GA to sharecropper parents who emphasized the importance of education and his artistic talent. Shortly after completing high school, Andrews served in the US Air Force for four years. Following his service, he moved to Chicago where he attended the Art Institute of Chicago, marking his first years of formal training.
