Nicola Vassell is pleased to present The Blues, the gallery's first presentation in the Galleries sector at Art Basel Miami Beach.
The group presentation focuses on blues as pigment, emotion or sound. The story of the color blue is over 4,000 years old. From its origin in Ancient Egypt, to the discovery of YImNn blue this century, the color gives an account of the dynamic evolution of art and man. The idiom “feeling blue” reflects a state of melancholy. The sentiment is said to date from the 1300s and Geoffrey Chaucer’s poetry. Blues coalesced as a musical form during the American Civil War in the country’s southern states. The genre developed from rural work songs, and was a new mode of expression for African Americans conveying desire, longing and loss.
Artists Julia Chiang, Adebunmi Gbadebo, Alteronce Gumby, Mallica "Kapo" Reynolds, Che Lovelace, Ming Smith, Uman and Alberta Whittle—on view in Nicola Vassell's booth—each offer a unique interpretation of The Blues.
