Gumby is a contemporary abstract painter interested in the history of monochromatic painting, color theory, cosmology, astrophysics, and interstellar photography. Gumby’s process is the fulcrum of his work. It begins with the examination of light and its properties, and media including resin, glass and gemstones. This unorthodox blend of materials results in works Gumby calls “tonal paintings”, each producing unique hues, values and energies. Dynamic and vibrant, Gumby’s paintings propose an expanded understanding of abstraction, color, life and the origins of the universe.

Biography

b. 1985, Harrisburg, Pennsylvania

Alteronce Gumby lives and works in the Bronx, New York. He received an MFA in Painting & Printmaking from Yale School of Art and BFA from Hunter College. He was a 2019 artist in residence at the Rauschenberg Foundation in Captiva Island, Florida. In 2017, he completed a residency as the Harriet Hale Woolley scholar at the Foundation des États-Unis in Paris.

Group exhibitions include Social Abstraction, Gagosian, Los Angeles (2024); Alteronce Gumby | Charles Ross, Parrasch Heijnen gallery, Los Angeles (2024); The 100 years, Gagosian x Deitch Exhibition, Miami, (2022) and For Freedoms, Pizzuti Collection of the Columbus Museum of Art, Columbus, Ohio (2018). Gumby’s work is held in the collections of The Studio Museum in Harlem, Columbus Museum of Art, Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, Williams College Museum of Art, Allentown Art Museum, and Memphis Brooks Museum of Art.
